It all started the morning of Monday, May 5th. We had been to the hospial Sunday night (I was having issues with high blood pressure) and had a follow up appointment Monday morning- was mention of induction. Before heading back to the hospital, we went for our scheduled ultrasound appointment. Everything looked good at the ultrasound and the technician estimated that the baby was about 7lbs 6oz. So, we were figuring that at full term he would weigh about 8lbs 7oz or more.
I was ‘checked’ out at the hospital and not much had changed (protein in the urine – and high blood pressure) One thing had changed – I was now 3 cm dilated ( I had been .5cm dilated Sunday night)- unknown to me the back pain I felt was labour pains. It was decided that the doctor would break my water.
My water was broken at 11am. The plan was to give me oxitocin to help move my labour on so that I would deliver during the day. Well, no drugs were really needed (I was given a bigttowards the end, but hardly any). So the pain wasn’t too bad to begin with, then it got a little worse, then it got really bad and then I had an epidural and all was good again. About 15 minutes or so after the epidural the nurse checked me and I was 10cm dilated – this was just after 3pm. I started pushing at about 3:30 and Cameron was born at 3:45pm. Not too many pushes needed, and he just flew out…The doctor just made it into the room in time.
Cameron was 17 days early, but still weighed 7lbs 7oz and measured 54cm. Brett and I couldn’t believe that he was actually there infront of us – I couldn’t believe that it hadn’t taken hours and hours of labouring to get him ‘out’. I think my exact words when they told me he had been delivered and he was being put on my chest were ” Are you freaking kidding me!”
Brett and I were so excited but also in a bit of shock as we hadn’t expected our Monday to turn out the way it did – and so began our life as a family of 3.
Cameron not even 24 hours old.
Mum with Cameron-he’s only minutes old.
Cameron and Dad day 1 – not even 24 hours old.
Mum and Dad came to visit us at visiting hours (6pm) and Brett stayed in the hospital with me Monday night. Because Cameron arrived so quickly he had a lot of mucus and didn’t feed on Tuesday. We ened up using formula as Cameron had jondice and he was not laching on well, and not getting enough from me (he is still feeding from a bottle although now it is breastmilk he gets. We are trying to get the breastfeeding thing going, but it is difficult) . Brett went home on Tuesday night to have a decent night’s sleep so that he would be ready for us coming home on Wednesday. I did quite well myself in the hospital with Cameron, but it is definitely much easier with 2.
We got home from the hospital on Wednesday night. My mum was there to meet us and stayed with us until today (Monday, May 12th). Aunt Christine came up from Toronto to help us too – she also went home today. They were so helpful…and a good laugh.
Cameron is doing really well. He sleeps well, he is very alert, he is very strong and he is a true Mackie/Walker combination – he is an excellent eater. He was down to 6lbs 15oz when we left the hospital, he was 7lbs when we went to the doctor’s on Friday, and today when the district nurse weighed him he was 7lbs 6oz – so 6oz in 3 days….he likes to eat.
Cameron is a cutie…he has all these great facial expressions – usually brought on by gas. He follows sounds with his eyes and he loves to cuddle.
So far everything is good…we’ll keep you posted!
I have posted more photos and some videos on Flickr – enjoy…
